The Long Shadows: Reclaiming the Light as Daylight Savings Ends

Reclaiming the light: Finding a quiet moment of freedom on the vast Whatipu sands as the winter shadows begin to stretch.

The unclothed truth about a Kiwi winter!

If you felt a bit of a shiver yesterday evening, you weren't the only one. With the clocks winding back and daylight savings officially "done and dusted," the long shadows of a Kiwi winter are starting to stretch across our nearby Kaimai and Coromandel Ranges. For those of us who live life in the open, this shift is more than just a change of time—it’s a change of pace.

The "Vanishing" Golden Hour

The most immediate change in April is the loss of that post-work golden hour. That sacred time for a quick naked garden or a final dip in the ocean waters before dinner has been cut short. We’ve gone from sun-soaked hours to a rapid descent into twilight. It means we have to be more intentional about "topping up the tank" with whatever Vitamin D we can find during that smaller daily window.

Winter-Friendly Freedom

But it’s not all doom and gloom. While the summer "splash" might be cooling off, the Pulse of our community simply moves to more winter-friendly pastimes. New Zealand winters are perfect for naked hiking through the bush or a brisk cycle on a crisp, clear morning—times when the air is sharp but the sun is still a welcome friend on your skin.

It’s also the season of the spa, or the legendary indoor gatherings where the Naked Truth is best shared over a hot mug of tea or a local brew.

"Naked"... with Socks?

Let’s be honest: the reality of a New Zealand winter is that sometimes "unclothed" includes a pair of thick woollen socks and a roaring fireplace. There are no gold medals for martyrdom! It’s about being comfortable in our own skin, even when that skin needs a bit of a "sweater assist" to enjoy the view.

So, as we settle into the long evenings, don't let the darkness deter you. Reclaim the light where you can, and remember that the community stays just as warm, even when the sun goes down early.

Keep an eye out for some winter-friendly activities notified on our website and social media pages over the coming weeks!
