Karangahake Gorge Cycle Ride

ree

We'll be riding another section of the Hauraki Rail Trail - this time starting just out of Paeroa, heading out alongside farmland and through the gorge towards Waihi. We will certainly go the 14 Km to Waikino (28 Km return) and maybe a little further, depending on how we feel on the day. This is another pretty easy ride. It will be slightly uphill on the way out, meaning a cruisy downhill return.

This section of the Rail Trail follows the Ohinemuri River through the dramatic Karangahake Gorge, cut through the divide between the Kaimai Range and Coromandel Forest Park. This distinctly different landscape includes the cascading Owharoa Falls, early gold mining sites, and the 1100-metre long railway tunnel that emerges onto a bridge across the river. You will need a lamp on your bike or helmet for the tunnel. If time permits we might have a look at the Windows Walkway that burrows through a shadowy side-gorge.

The date for this is Friday 28th May. Mark it on your calendar! If you need to organise your work roster to get this day off, then now's the time. This is a ride you won't want to miss!

Details:

We will meet at 9 a.m. sharp at the Rotokohu Sports Ground Carpark, directly opposite Oranga Tamariki, on the corner of Rotokohu Road and State Highway 26, Paeroa.

If you'd like to join the car-pool from Hamilton, meet at Keith's place at 7:45 a.m.

If you'd like to join the car-pool from Pipiroa, meet at Rok's place at 8:15 a.m.

Message or email me if you need any directions.

Wear at least a T-shirt and a waterproof jacket to warm up in for the first few Km. Bring water and lunch, and you'll need a decent lamp or torch for the 1.1 Km tunnel section.
