Excellent to be reminded that our rights will likely prevail in the courts, but that the NZ constabulary still has a way to go. It’s the occasional law man or law woman who in receipt of a complaint, proceeds according to their personal prejudices rather than upholding the law as it stands.
A recent case (2025) involved someone a few of us here know and regard warmly. He was targeted by a policewoman who had received a complaint from a busybody for being innocently naked on Tawhitokino beach, which he had been enjoying for many years.
He was traced using his reported vehicle registration and received a telephoned bollocking from a local policewoman, who ignored his rights in favour of the complainant and warned him not to go back there unclothed.
Although vigorously maintaining his lawful right, he felt sufficiently intimidated to never return there, a beautiful long but isolated beach with very few visitors.
